Vandals trash Stafford 'jewel in the crown' park

Written bySarah Marshall and Robin Scott

A FURIOUS Stafford resident says vandals are wrecking Stafford’s “jewel in the crown park” - and is urging parents to stand up and stop them.

Sue Fox says yobs have been on the rampage in Victoria Park and are ruining it for everyone else.

The grandstand has been daubed with graffiti and people flout the no alcohol exclusion zone by downing booze underneath the restriction signs says Mrs Fox.

And she says there have been homeless people bedding down in the park at night.

“What people are doing in that park is nothing short of sacrilegious,” she said. “I just feel so angry about it.

“They’ve daubed their names in yellow all over the bandstand. Now, some parent will know who that is and they should speak up. I really want to put a call out to parents, are these your kids doing this?”

Stafford Borough Councillor Chris Baron, a former secretary of the Friends of Victoria Park and a member of Stafford’s Crime Prevention Panel, said: “The park is a non-alcohol area and drinking needs to be nipped in the bud quickly.”

A Stafford Borough Council spokesman said the authority had been liaising with police and community safety and patrolling the park.

"Any anti-social behaviour should be reported to the police."

The spokesman added: “Police are investigating the bandstand graffiti and we will help them with any information they need to catch those responsible.

“We carry out patrols, and liaise with the police, to clamp down on anyone found drinking alcohol in the park.”
