Wedded bliss is thanks to Mr Porter

A STAFFORD couple who remained on track for 60 years celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary this week said their courtship owed a lot to Gnosall railway station and the kindly porter that worked there.

Norman and Brenda Shrehorn were married at St Lawrence Church in 1953 but Norman says they might not have made it without the help of Station Porter Bill Cooper (pictured in last week’s Times Gone By).

Norman told the Newsletter when he was courting Brenda, who lived in Gnosall, he often found himself running to catch the last train to Stafford.

“I remember Bill would be waiting with our rail tickets as the train didn’t stop long,” he said. “Without his help we would have missed the train and it was a long walk back to Stafford.”
