The newborn boy was left outside the Beresford Street site in Shelton on March 6 wrapped in motoring pages from the January 21 edition. There was a note which said “Please help bury him”, and an Arabic word for thank-you.

But the youngster was still alive and was taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire. Sadly he was declared dead at 12.30pm.

To mark the one-week anniversary on Saturday a videocast by Chief Inspector Wayne Jones was posted at www.youtube.com/staffordshirepolice

Mr Jones said: “As well as making dedicated appeals to the immediate community, and staff and students at Stoke-on-Trent College and Staffordshire University, we’re using YouTube and the force’s Facebook and Twitter sites to try to reach the baby’s mother.

“It’s our absolute priority to trace the mother to give her the help and support she needs, and the videocast includes a direct appeal to her.”

Anyone with information should contact the Beresford Street incident room at Staffordshire Police on 0300 123 44 55 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is carrying out an independent investigation to examine the initial response to this incident after the matter was referred to them on March 6.
