STAFFORD Road Club has been chosen to host the second of six National Time Trial Series events which have attracted a top field of riders.

Star and finish for the events is the centre of Weston village and in the women’s event, Olympic gold medallist and British National champion Joanna Rowsell (Wigglehonda Pro Team) leads the field.

In the men’s event Matt Bottrill (Drag2Racing) heads the list. Bottrill beat Ben Swift (Sky Pro Team) to take silver in last year’s National Championship and he also holds 50 national championships, and is set to become Britain’s best ever domestic time trialist.

The event takes place on the Sporting Course and starts in Weston village. Riders will then head east along the A51 before turning north over Blithfield reservoir to Uttoxter and then south again along the A518 back to Weston.

Riders will climb 422 metres as they travel around the 22 mile course making this a very tough event indeed.

The cyclists have been entered into five separate categories with the paracyclists going first, followed by the veterans (over 40 years), women’s, Juniors (18 and under) and finally the men’s and Espoirs (19 to 23 years)

The first ride start time is 11.01am and riders will set off at one minute intervals with the top riders in each category being set off two minutes apart.

Full details of the event, course map and start sheets can be found on Stafford Road Club’s website www.staffordrc.org.

“We hope that there will be a good turnout of local cyclists and enthusiasts who come to see Britain’s top riders warming up at the headquarters in Weston Village Hall and to cheer the riders along the course,” said Stafford RC’s Alastair Semple.

The National Series awards over £1,200 of prizes to the winners and awards £500 at this event alone. The prize presentation is scheduled to start at 2.10pm in the HQ.

“We were so pleased to be chosen to host this event knowing the quality of the field it would attract and to give our local riders the opportunity to ride against some of Britain’s best cyclists,” said Semple.

“Two of the top riders, Joanna Rowsell and Matt Bottrill will be known by many after Joanna won gold at the Olympics and last year when the BBC televised the British National Time Trial championships in Glasgow where Joanna took gold and Matt silver in their own events.

“Joanna won the World Individual Pursuit Track Champions earlier this month so is obviously on top form.”

The K48/23 course is challenging and will take riders over Blithfield reservoir, to Uttoxeter before turning back towards Stafford and tackle the three tough climbs back along the A518 to the finish at Weston village.

“We are expecting a good turnout of local riders who will come along to watch the event or perhaps put in a loop on their usual Sunday club rides to watch their favourite riders competing on our local roads,” said Semple.

At the HQ in Weston Village Hall you will also get to see the riders close up as they warm up, see their state-of-the-art time trial bikes and at the prize presentation afterwards.
