Safe standing

The Liberal Democrats have pledged as part of their 2015 General Election manifesto to reintroduce safe standing at Premier League and Championship football grounds.

The upper divisions of English football have been required to have all-seater stadia after 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

Safe standing is already popular in German football and a number of Premier League football clubs, such as Aston Villa and Swansea City, have already expressed an interest in this idea.

Benefits could include cheaper season tickets for fans with season tickets in Germany much cheaper than the UK equivalent as well as many more fans to watch the match unseated but safety is a concern, with The Hillsborough Families Support Group maintaining their position against any return of standing.
