PENKRIDGE firsts secured promotion into the Birmingham and District Division Two for the first time after recording a double victory over the bank holiday weekend.
Going into Saturday’s tie at home against Streetly they knew that a win and other results going their way would secure them promotion.
The hosts were put into bat and started well with opener Ben Holmes hitting 52 and leading them to 112-3.
But the middle order could not add to the runs as they fell to 146-8 before Muhammad Murad (31no) and Kevin Baker (16no) boosted them to 209-9 from their 50 overs, top bowling figures were recorded by Shaun Findlay on 3-42.
In reply, Streetly struggled to get going and only a knock of 43 by Craig Moore and Findlay (20) helped the visitors to reach 120-5.
The second half of the visitors batsmen were not so successful and they were skittled out for 161 from 45 overs giving Penkridge a 48 run victory thanks to bowling figures of 3-35 from Shafiq Ahmed.
With Kings Heath and Bidgnorth both losing this was enough for the firsts to secure promotion before Monday’s game at Evesham.
Full of confidence from the promotion Saturday the firsts decided to bat and quickly put a good total together with opener Holmes top scoring on 65.
Rana Hassan then came in and put on an unbeaten 63 as Penkridge hit 242-4 from their 50 overs.
Evesham in reply struggled to string together a good partnership as the bowling attack ripped through the middle order with Ahmed Shah top scoring on 34.
Eventually the hosts were bowled out well short of the target on 171 from 46 overs, with bowling figures of 3-32 from Laeq Chishti.
Going into the final three matches Penkridge have a 45 point gap over second place Tamworth so look set to win the title.
