PENKRIDGE resident and former Buckingham Palace guard Mark Yellowley has celebrated his milestone 100th birthday.

Mr Yellowlee, who lives at Longridge Care Home in Levedale Road, received his telegram from the Queen yesterday as he prepared to mark his special day with family and friends.

He was born in Northumberland and later joined the Coldstream Guards, working as a guard outside Buckingham Palace.

He also served at Dunkirk during the Second World War, before later working as a miner, working in Rugeley for some time before returning up north.

Mr Yellowley, who was married to Doris and has one step-son, is still fairly independent. He says he enjoys a little flutter on the horses and the company of women friends, which helps to keep him young.
