WORZEL Gummidge would have been proud! More than 35 scarecrows popped up in and around Hilderstone at the weekend - thanks to the creative flair of villagers.

Organiser Christine Clark said this year's Scarecrow Weekend - an annual event raising funds for the village's Christ Church, was the biggest and best yet.

"It was excellent and we had lots of visitors throughout the weekend," she said.

"Fortunately the sun came out for the start of the event on Saturday afternoon so our spirits weren't dampened by the rain - and the scarecrows didn't get soaked either."

The weekend was rounded off with a special service at Christ Church. People were encouraged to dress up as scarecrows and bring their scarecrows along, and Mrs Clark said the church was packed.

"A lot of people got dressed up and it was a lovely end to the weekend," she said.

Organisers are still adding up the funds collected over the weekend.
