POLICE were forced to cordon off an of Stafford’s Town Centre yesterday after high winds caused a section of roof to crash down onto the high street.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: “We received a call just before 11.45am this morning reporting a large tile had blown off the roof of Thomas Cook, in Gaolgate Street, Stafford.

“Police attended the scene and cordoned off the area for public safety.”

A spokesman for Stafford Borough Council said: "We assisted the police to put a cordon around the site.

"We are liaising with Thomas Cook," he said. "They must ensure it is safe and we will want the barriers to remain in place until we are sure nothing else is going to fall off the roof."
