PENKRIDGE Middle School has been celebrating a fantastic athletics achievement.

A total of 25 athletes from year's five and six are the School Games Level 3 County Champions in sportshall athletics in Staffordshire.

Across the county, in excess of 79 schools participated in the competition. After success in the first round and district finals, the Penkridge squad competed in the county finals at Chase Leisure Centre, Cannock.

The schools' key stage 2 - aged pupils had never ever reached the county finals in five years of participation in the event, so the success of getting this far was something to celebrate in itself.

The county finals comprised nine teams from the different districts and both boys and girls from Penkridge demonstrated their ability individually and showed their very positive attitudes to working as a team in the running events, obstacle relays, throwing and jumping and speed bounce events.

In the final relay of the day, Penkridge were winning by six points against Dosthill from Tamworth.

The two schools were in different heats, so it was all dependant on time. Dosthill came third in their heat, while Penkridge won their heat but their time was slower than the first three runners of heat one. After 12 track and field events for boys and girls, Penkridge won by four points.

Shane Sutton, head of PE at Penkridge School said: "It's a fantastic competition and I'm extremely proud of the success and the teamwork our pupils have shown."
