Resident launches petition against Stafford Prison sex offender centre

AN ANGRY Stafford woman left horrified by plans for sex offenders to pour into Stafford has set up a petition against it.

Jackie French, 49, said she was left outraged by plans to make Stafford Prison a national centre for sex offenders, reported exclusively in the Newsletter last week.

The 200-year-old town centre jail already has nearly 300 sex offenders inside and has an established accredited rehabilitation programme.

By October all of its 741 inmates will be sex offenders and some of them might be resettled in Stafford as part of their release programme.

But Mrs French, a mum-of-four and grandmother of three, has said she is standing up against it as the town is already losing its university campus and facing having its hospital downgraded.

“We don’t just want to be known as a centre for sex offenders,” she said.

“Stafford is the county town but it is fast losing all of its vital services and gaining others that we don’t want.

“When I read the Newsletter last week I couldn’t believe it. I have set up an online petition and I am urging people to sign it and show their opposition against it.

“I have grandchildren and I worry about what we are leaving behind for them. Let’s stand up in support of our town.”

The petition can be found on the New Spotted Stafford site on Facebook at www.facebook.com
