STAFFORD runners are on their mark for the 30th annual Stafford Half Marathon.
Entries open tomorrow for the borough-council organised event on Sunday March 16, with prospective runners able to register in person at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre on Eastgate Street, by calling 01785 254 653 or online at www.staffordbc.gov.uk/halfmarathon.
Councillor Mike Smith, cabinet member for leisure and a former half marathon competitor said: “This event has got more and more popular over the years and is now rightly seen as one of the top races in the county’s sporting calendar.
“It is a tribute to the organisation and quality of this race that after 30 years it is proving more attractive to athletes and competitors than it ever has," he said. “I would urge all those who want to take part in the 2014 run to get their entries in as soon as possible because places fill up quickly once registration opens.”
This year's event attracted around 2,600 runners to the race which starts in Stafford Street at 10am, heading off from the town centre into Stafford's surrounding countryside, incorporating two steady climbs before returning to the market square via Victoria Park.
Crowds regularly line the thirteen-mile route cheering on runners and local community groups, bands and schoolchildren are all encouraged to get involved and offer their support to the runners along the course.
Entry for the race will be closed when the 2,600 capacity is reached and each participant will receive a medal and a running shirt for competing.
The School and Family Fun Run will also take place on the same day with more details made available soon.
