LABOUR’S shadow health secretary says it is vital the Government remove all doubt over the future of Stafford Hospital in its response today to Robert Francis’ report into the disaster at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust.
Andy Burnham MP said: “After all they have been through, it would not be fair on the people of Stafford if the end result of this process is that they lose their hospital.
“Ministers need to ensure a safe and sustainable hospital for the people of Stafford.”
He said what happened at Stafford Hospital was a betrayal of everything the NHS should stand for.
“Robert Francis' recommendations will help it learn the necessary lessons and we urge the Government to accept them,” he said. “Two of the most crucial recommendations are on the duty of candour and safe staffing on the wards.
“We are concerned there is evidence that things are moving in the wrong direction.”
Mr Burnham said he was concerned there was evidence that things were moving in the wrong direction and said it was a real worry nursing jobs continue to be cut across the NHS suggesting there was a real danger of forgetting the lessons of the recent past.
“With the CQC saying one in ten hospitals are understaffed, Ministers must listen to the warnings and intervene to stop the nursing job cuts,” said Mr Burnham. “It is their responsibility to ensure every hospital in England has safe staffing levels and we will hold them to that.”
