SOUTH Staffs Sailing Club (Gailey) have been celebrating a memorable third success in the Southport 24 hour dinghy sailing race.
On what proved a great day for the club, South Staffs emerged overall winners after completing 84 laps, from Budworth SC (83) and Derwent Reservoir (82).
And out of 61 entries, South Staffs’ youth team were placed an excellent 13th overall, while a huge achievement was that of young members, Ed Dutton and Sam Bloxhich.
They were raising money for the RNLI and finished a very creditable 23rd after sailing the entire 24 hours unaided. The club’s B team were 36th.
Most teams consisted of several members, taking two hour sailing slots, the race having started at mid-day. At time, crews battled through several torrential rain, which makes the achievement of Dutton and Bloxhich even more amazing.
Blithfield SC’s Elizabeth Dugmore from Stafford has achieved a national final spot in the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship at Southampton on Sunday. She will compete in the 13-16 year age group.
