STAFFORD Road Club is holding its annual challenge ride on Sunday, February 24, open to everyone, with a choice of two routes.

Last year the event attracted more than 140 cyclists, leading to organisers staggering the start times this year between 8.45 and 9.15am for groups of eight and 18 riders.

Both 48 and 67 mile routes start and finish at Stafford Rugby Club and entry is £3 per rider including refreshments on return. The routes take in places such as Stone, Loggerheads, Market Drayton, Nantwich, Audlem, both returning to Stafford through Gnosall.

A fast standard time will be awarded for anyone quicker than 2 hours 30 minutes and an average standard time for 3hrs 30mins for 48 miles, the equivalent for 67 miles being 3.10 and 4.20 respectively.

A club spokesman said the event was more a test of endurance than a race. “All you need is a bike in good working order, helmet, a strong heart, legs and lungs and a little bit of determination,” he said.
