Eccleshall upset form book and ease pressure

ECCLESHALL 1st XV turned the form book on its head with a memorable 36-24 home win over third place Bloxwich.

The Baden Hall side were keen not to make the same mistakes that cost them victory against Wednesbury the previous week and from the outset played an expansive, free flowing game.

 

Early tries from fly half Tom Hodgkinson and centre Mark Howells gave Eccleshall an advantage, but Bloxwich levelled.

Eccleshall continued to spread the ball wide and good support work from prop Bobby Cheadle resulted in his first try for the club and a 17-12 interval lead.

The home side increased the lead soon after the restart through Chris Whalley, with a converted score, and James Denning.

Bloxwich hit back strongly, running in two tries themselves to cut the deficit to seven points.

When Eccleshall responded they were penalised as sub Paul Firth was deemed to be in front of the kicker. From the

resultant penalty, Bloxwich advanced into the Eccleshall half, but good work at the line-out from captain Nick Hulse secured ball for the home side.

Hodgkinson cleared upfield and great chasing from Eccleshall resulted in the Bloxwich full back being over-run by home players and winger Joel Williams gathered and ran clear to score a match- winning try.

Hodgkinson added the conversion to secure the win, one that enabled the Baden Hall outfit to climb well clear of
