Poor show leaves hockey first with uphill struggle

Written byDave McLean

STAFFORD HC firsts’ woeful form continued last weekend after they lost 4-3 to fellow strugglers Whitchurch HC, in West Midlands One.

The local side really can have no complaints after a dismal first 20 minutes saw them concede four goals.

Ironically, Stafford started well enough, James Gillingham scoring from a tight angle in the first ten minutes. However after that Stafford just seemed to lose all self-control, tackles were missed and poor communication saw Whitchurch score two soft goals.

Stafford then conceded a couple of weak penalty corners, Brad Evans made some good first saves but the rebounds were picked up by the opposition and dispatched.

After half-time, Stafford did pull themselves together and mounted some sustained pressure, but the Whitchurch goal keeper was in superb form and continually denied the Riverway team.

Late on, Stafford did finally gain two goals, Dan Howe scoring both after good work by Andy Peatfield and man of the match Dan Rennie.

It was all too little too late and now Stafford are second bottom with an uphill struggle to stay in West Midlands One.

Hopefully it will back to basics when Stafford travel to Leamington HC on Saturday, hoping to repeat the victory they achieved over the Warwickshire team in the first half of the season.
