Rangers hit five and move ninth

STAFFORD Rangers fired four second half goals to sink visiting Stocksbridge Park Steels 5-1 and so make it three consecutive league wins under boss Greg Clowes for the first time this season, writes Dave McLean.

Although Clowes admitted the match was scrappy in the opening 25 minutes, once Rangers got a hold of the game and opened their account on the half hour they ran out worthy winners.

It was new boy Chris Morris, on his home debut, who fired Rangers in front, chasing down a fine through ball from experienced midfielder Kevin Street to beat Stocksbridge keeper Ben Scott with a low shot.

Morris was withdrawn at the break after hearing news that his partner, who was expecting the couple's first child, had gone into labour.

And there was no stopping his new colleagues who went on to record the club's biggest home success of the campaign.

Just on the hour, visiting winger Alex Callery turned a low cross from Jon Sheldon into his own net.

Further pressure from the home side resulted in Neville Thompson forcing the ball home from close range after Sheldon delivered a free kick into the danger zone on 69 minutes.

Although the visitors pulled a goal back through Scott Hogan after Rangers failed to clear a free kick with 11 minutes to go, Boro went on to make it a nap hand in stoppage time.

Firstly, substitute Rob Stevenson cut the ball back for Thomspon, who slipped two Stocksbridge defenders and cooly chipped over Scott.

Three minutes into injury time, Luke George picked out Stevenson with a superb pass and the youngster raced clear to slide the ball past the visiting keeper.

This latest success enabled Rangers to climb four places, up to ninth in the Evo Stik premier, seven points off the play-off places.

On Tuesday, Rangers visit local North West Counties side Eccleshall in a friendly (7.45pm), before resuming their league programme at fourth place Chorley on Saturday (3pm).
