Riverway overturn high-flying Redgate

Written byDave McLean

RIVERWAY returned to action this week in the quarter finals of the Staffordshire Challenge Cup and ran out 3-1 winners over high flying county league division two side Redgate Clayton reserves.

Back in the Riverway ranks were Dave O'Grady and Dave Wilcocks and the visitors found themselves under  early pressure as Redgate attempted to stamp their authority on the game.

But Riverway responded, although Wilcocks could not direct his header goal wards, while Earl Grant fired wide.

However Riverway did not have to wait long for the opening goal. When the home side failed to clear, it was Grant cut inside and bent the ball into the top corner.

Just before the half hour mark, Redgate got back on level terms when they took advantage of an error in the Riverway defence and a smart cross was headed home past Steve McCabe.

Redgate continued to press at this time looking to take a lead into the break but Riverway held resolutely to make it 1-1 at half time.

The visitors came out in the second half pressing high up the pitch and looking to take advantage of Redgate’s slope but struggled to create any opportunities against a strong Redgate back line. It was to be the hosts that would have the best chance as Matt Barlow broke free but could only fire wide of the Riverway goal.

Riverway restored the lead when Jay Arnold took control of the ball, skipped past three players before seeing his shot rebound off a post only for Duffy to rifle home.

Redgate looked to press but were caught out when Duffy was released down the left. He unselfishly cut the ball back to Martyn Wheeler to wrap up Riverway's place in the semi finals.

Riverway are back in league action this Saturday at home too Red Star Alma.
