Stafford rugby club juniors open with impressive win

Written byDave McLean

STAFFORD Rugby Club under-14s opened their league programme with a comprehensive 32-0 win over Wolverhampton.

First score for Stafford came from an infringement in a ruck, the penalty kicked by Will Turner.

Stafford lead 17-0 at the break, with two converted tries, before adding further scores in the second period with some scintillating runs from the forwards.

It was all square when Stafford under-17s visited Staffordshire rivals Newcastle, the game ending 15-15.

After a strong start by both teams, with good competitive rugby throughout, Stafford were first to score.

Just six minutes had gone when hard working second row forward Gareth Smith crossed the line, but the conversion failed.

Newcastle responded with a converted try, but back came Stafford on 30 minutes with a try from Nathan Ford to regain the lead, only for the hosts to level by the break.

The second half proved a tight affair, with Newcastle scoring first to take a 15-10 advantage.

But Stafford replied swiftly, and after a kick by scrum half Ben Pryce and excellent handling by the backs, Ford raced over for his second try of the game.

Stafford remain unbeaten in Staffs league (North) after four matches.

Outstanding for the Castlefields side were Will Nash and captain Sam Johnson. Stafford u13s hit Willenhall 60-0.
