Star runner off to Boston Games

Stafford grammar School's golden boy of athletics, Adam Cotton, heads to the United States today to compete in the Boston junior indoor mile.

The England U20 indoor 800m title holder is the only young British athlete to have received an invitation to the Reebok Boston Indoor Games.

On Saturday, he will take on a top class field, including America's leading junior miler this season, Patrick Schellberg, as well as Craig Lutz, the reigning Nike USA cross country national champion for his age-group.

"It's going to be an exciting, packed month and I will be pretty tired towards the end. In Boston I'll be running against a quality field of junior high school age athletes," said Cotton.

"There will be some big names taking part in the senior races too, so it will be nice to be around those people." The trip is part of a packed February programme for the 18- year-old, who made an impressive start to the year by winning the recent U20 Reebok Manchester Open Meeting indoor 600m race.

Cotton, who trains with Birchfield Harriers AC, has also received a call-up for the senior Aviva World Indoor Trials and UK Championships in Sheffield the following weekend, where he will compete in the 800m against Britain's best who are looking to secure their place on the GB team bound for the World Indoor Championships at Doha in March.

And the sixth former from Penkridge completes this month's busy agenda in Birmingham on February 27 when he hopes to defend his national U20 indoor title and chalk up a personal best time.

"The trials at Sheffield will be the toughest race for me to date, as I'll be competing against adults who are all very, very good. My aim there will be just to do a decent time.

"Obviously it would be nice to get the national title again in Birmingham, but it could be even tougher than last year. I hope at least to get a medal there and I've still got another year in the age group," he added.
