FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round Replay
Brocton 2 Atherstone Town 1
BROCTON are through to the next round of the FA Cup Extra after winning their preliminary round replay against Atherstone Town.
The home side threatened early when Dan Loma got in a good cross that was headed clear by Adders Centre back David Alsop. Gary Fife then had a shot which was easily saved by visiting keeper Phil Smith.
Fife was not to be denied for long though - on eight minutes a free kick from Brocton’s player-manager Dave Berks found Steve Hopkinson who took it forward and threaded a pass through to Fife on the corner of the box. The prolific scorer opened up his body and side footed the ball into the far corner of the net to give the Badgers an early lead.
Atherstone tried to hit back with a shot from George Brindley but it was blocked by a well-disciplined Brocton defence.
On 14 minutes a clever back heel by Fife played in Dave Ablewhite who squared the ball to Berks only for a defender to block his shot.
A right wing corner for Atherstone was headed goalwards by Simeon Smith but comfortably held by Badgers keeper Calum Barrett who won plaudits for his confident handling throughout the game.
The Adders brought on substitute Darren Begleton for the second half to boost their attacking options down the right and try to capitalise on the impressive centre forward play of Simeon Smith.
But it was left back Ashley Grange who grabbed the equaliser on 64 minutes after being sent clear on the opposite flank when he cut in and rolled the ball past the advancing Barrett into the empty net.
They did not stay level for long though as Brocton centre back Rob Tomlinson popped up on the left wing and played a superb ball into the feet of Fife in the box. A sudden explosion of pace shook off his marker and he twisted and fired an unstoppable left foot shot into the top corner of Phil Smith’s net.
Brocton then pressed for a third goal but were denied by the bar and a couple of saves from Smith. In stoppage time the Adders threw everything forward including keeper Smith but all they had to show for it was another yellow card as Smith was booked for a foul on his opposite number Barrett to prevent him punting the ball down towards the visitors’ unguarded net.
Brocton are away to Sutton Coldfied Town in the next round on August 30.
