Stafford Councillor Robert Stephenson: new mobile phone masts are a good deal

A BOROUGH councillor says two separate mobile phone mast applications which could finally lead to the sale of the former police headquarters are a good deal but residents say they don’t want them.

Vodafone have put applications in for masts on land at the junction of Weeping Cross and The Rise, Walton on the Hill and another at Cannock Road.

Councillor Rob Stephens has called the Weeping Cross application in for debate by Stafford Borough Council’s planning committee.

He said: “I have spoken to the mobile phone companies and I think it’s a good deal for Stafford because those masts will replace the huge mast on the police site and they will be able to sell that land and increase the value of it for the tax payer.”

Mrs Samantha Brownless, of Old Croft Road, said: “I’m shocked that this application is even being considered especially so close to a school when the health implications are not fully understood. The height of this mast will be an obvious blot on our local landscape and along with its equipment it will be an unacceptable ugly hunk of metal which will not blend into Weeping Cross and will stand out like a sore thumb.”

The other application has been called in by Councillors Mike Heenan and John Frances because of concerns it would be obtrusive, have a visual impact and be out of character with the area.

Jill Benton, of Wildwood Lawns, said: “Placing the mast and its attached cabinets on a footpath where people walk will cause an obstruction. Old people living locally use the bus stop and crossing and their access will be restricted.

“As to further masts which will be needed in the future, a coherent plan must be made to site them as far away from housing as possible.”

Both applications are set to be decided by March 20.
