STAFFORD Hospital bosses have moved to reassure residents that the A&E department is open as normal.
It comes after rumours circulated that the unit was closed when a number of patients had to be diverted to other hospitals because there were no beds available at Stafford.
Maggie Oldham, chief executive, said: “I can assure the public that Stafford A&E is open from 8am to 10pm today as usual. As happens at all hospitals when there is a shortage of beds, some ambulances are having to be diverted to other hospitals to help reduce the number of patients being admitted. The public who need to use A&E should attend between 8am and 10pm as usual.
“There are no restrictions to our paediatric assessment unit which remains open 24/7 to ambulances and GP referred-patients.
“We will continue to monitor the situation carefully throughout the day.”
