STAFFORD Hospital should have its 24/7 A&E services restored, the Shadow Health Secretary said during a visit to the town today.
Labour MP Andy Burnham took a tour of Staffordshire University’s health faculty this afternoon, viewing training facilities and speaking to nursing and midwifery students and staff.
He told the Newsletter he was visiting because “he felt an obligation to Stafford and its people after all they had been through”, following the revelation of failings at Stafford Hospital and the subsequent enquiries, financial difficulties and uncertain future.
“The geography of the area means, as far as it can, Stafford needs a functioning district general hospital”, Mr Burnham said.
“The people of the town deserve a safe and sustainable hospital and an important part of a district general hospital is a 24 hour A&E.”
Mr Burnham was invited to the town by Support Stafford Hospital campaigners, he added.
“I want to support them in any way I can, working, if necessary, cross-party to achieve that.”
