Stafford Rangers 0 Worksop Town 2

STAFFORD Rangers fell closer the relegation trap door after this latest home defeat at the hands of title-chasers Worksop Town on Saturday

Third bottom Rangers, whose fate could be decided over the coming week, survived an early scare when Worksop's Jack Muldoon had a goal ruled out for offside.

And Rangers had another let off on 28 minutes when Worksop top scorer Leon Mettam fired wide from the penalty spot after home defender Lewis Chalmers had tripped Jake Scott in the area.

But the visitors were not to be denied and Rangers conceded their 100th league goal this season when Adam Quinn forced the ball home from close range from a Conor Higginson corner.

Rangers responded at the start of the second half with young winger Alex Curtis twice going close.

But second place Worksop were always in charge and Mettam had a second goal disallowed, this time for a foul by team-mate Tom Denton in the box.

Worksop wrapped up the points when scoring their 106th goal of the campaign.

Rangers striker James McCarthy brought down Scott just inside the area and this time Mettam made no mistake, bagging his 42nd goal of the season.

Only a fine stop by 19-year-old debutant Rangers keeper Johnny Sutherland thwarted Denton as the visitors looked to rub more salt into the Marston Road club's wound.

Next up for Rangers, who remain 16 points off the team above them (21st place) and a further point off safety, visit Grantham Town in the league on Tuesday night.
