STAFFORD Rangers remain second bottom in the Evo Stik Premier after suffering their fifth league defeat in six at home to leaders Skelmersdale United on Saturday.
The Marston Road men were facing an uphill task as early as the eighth minute after conceding two early goals, both scored by United's Shaun Tuck.
This latest defeat, Rangers' 12th in 16 league games, leaves them second bottom and now five points behind the team directly above them, Stocksbridge Park Steels, who pulled off a 4-3 home win against mid-table Grantham.
The Boro remain nine points off safety (four go down) after Stamford in 20th spot lost out 2-1 at home to Whitby.
In the Les James Challenge Cup, Midland Combination premier leaders Brocton marched on.
They visited Midland Combination division two outfit Coventry United and edged into the next round with a 1-0 victory.
In the same competition, Stafford Town also progressed after being involved in a high scoring tie against Pilkington XXX.
The teams shared eight goals at the end of normal time, before the Reds eventually took the tie 6-4.
