STAFFORD Rugby Club has lined up a major move to a new home in the town.

The club took a major step forward in securing its long-term future today signing an outline with Lord Stafford, the club's president, agreeing details for a proposed move to a new site near Doxey.

Club chairman Martin Lennon said: ““These plans have been in discussion for many years and it is very exciting that we now have this framework to build on.

“The new facilities have been developed to support the current and future demands of rugby in Stafford,” he said. “We have set out to ensure that all of the members and teams are catered for, from the six-year-olds through to the colts, senior men’s teams as well as the ladies and girls teams.”

He said as part of the plans the first team pitch, with a new stand, would be the central focus and with modern facilities the club hoped to attract not only new players to the club but more games too.

The new purpose-built club house and pitches, designed and developed to the highest modern standards for rugby, are proposed on the site of the old Henry Venables timber yard in Doxey Road by the railway line.

In a signing ceremony at the club on Saturday, Mr Lennon thanked Lord Stafford for his ongoing support of the club where he serves as President.

Lord Stafford said: “We have had along association with the club ever since my father agreed the original lease and it is great that we have reached this agreement which will help take the club forwards and continue to serve the community in Stafford.”

Mr Lennon said, for the club, this was a chance to build on its success and welcome even more sports and associations through the doors of the new facility.

“Having ‘state of the art’ facilities for functions as well as meeting rooms and segregated changing rooms opens up endless possibilities to serve more closely the community around us,” he said.

Stafford MP Jeremy Lefroy welcomed the proposals, highlighting the need in the town in general and Doxey particularly for plans of this nature.

“We have worked very hard in recent times to ensure there were good facilities available in the area and this new proposal will proved excellent facilities to this community” he said. “Having discussed the vision of the club with them I am very excited by the possibilities this development offers”

The plans will now go forward for formal consultation with the club hoping to be in the new facility in time for the Rugby World Cup to be held in England in 2015.

Hi, as I understand the site they're looking at is behind Timberfields Road between the houses and the marshes. There's a patch of land there owned by Lord Stafford that they have earmarked for this. Does that make more sense?

I don't understand where this will be. Haven't they already built houses on the old Venables site? And then there's just the Marshes - surely they can't build on that?
