AN EARLY gift of free parking will be on offer to Saturday festive shoppers in Stafford and Stone town centres in the run-up to Christmas.
Charges will be waived at all borough council car parks from 1pm on December 15 and 22, both of which are also latenight shopping days.
The aim is to encourage people into the town to spend their Christmas cash.
Free parking is also available on Sundays at all borough council car parks throughout the year.
Meanwhile, the Newsletter’s campaign to trial free after 3pm parking is continuing to gather pace, with Stone town councillors signing our petition.
Councillor Philip Jones first touted the idea to encourage more shoppers to come into the town and keep business booming in the high street.
The petition has since been signed by hundreds of residents and has the support of many traders in both towns.
The borough council had been reluctant to trial it amid fears it could potentially cost £300,000 in lost income and lead to an increase in traffic but council leader Mike Heenan has pledged to give is some consideration.
A complete review of parking is also set to be completed at the end of the year and could include free parking at the planned Morrisons development.
Councillor Philip Jones said: “There is still much support for free after three and a number of Stone town councillors have now signed the petition. I will continue to push for it.”
