WHERE WERE YOU BORN? I was born right here in Stafford.

WHAT WAS YOUR CHILDHOOD LIKE? It was very stable and happy.

TELL US A CHILDHOOD MEMORY.

My Dad ran the sweet shop next to the Odeon cinema and my kids laugh that I'm good at wrapping Christmas presents because of practice wrapping chocolate boxes in the shop.

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO DO WHEN YOU LEFT SCHOOL?

I left school and then went to Trent Poly to study for a social work degree.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

I then joined the Army and completed a short service commission because you couldn't join the Probation Service before age 27.

HOW DID YOUR CAREER PROGRESS?

I joined Staffordshire Probation Service age 27 in 1986 and progressed to work in different settings and different levels.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START WRITING?

I spent a lot of time imputting data into a computer, which was very systemic. I felt I could not affect that world but I could influence the imaginary world. I came up with a list of ideas and themes for the book, which is called In the Shadow of the Bayonet. It is based around three characters who are retired from working in the justice system.

HOW CHALLENGING DID YOU FIND THE WRITING?

The writing was no problem at all. I am used to writing reports. It was more of a challenge getting my head around the publishing process. I saw a book written by a local author and emailed the author to ask about the self-publishing process and I got lots of advice. The book will be available in print from Waterstone’s and online from Amazon. I have enjoyed doing it.

DO YOU HAVE ANY REGRETS?

I've had a few but not really any great regrets.

WHAT ARE YOUR AMBITIONS?

My ambition is to retire and do something different.

DO YOU HAVE ANOTHER BOOK IN MIND?

Yes, I have already written the second and am writing a third one now.
