WOLVERHAMPTON Hospital is stepping in to support elderly care at the Mid Staffs Trust because of a shortage of senior staff.

A Wolverhampton consultant is now looking after Cannock Hospital's Fairoak rehabilitation ward to ease pressure on Stafford Hospital's doctors.

Mark Partington, the trust director working on transitional plans, said two out of four senior posts in elderly care remained unfilled and there appeared to be "no prospect" of recruiting permanent consultants.

"We have had a range of locums, something like 12 or 13 this year in each of the vacant posts, and that has meant quite an unstable and fragile service," he said.
