A STAFFORD-based housing group has donated more than £2,000 to a cancer charity, after being inspired to raise money by an employee’s personal experience with the disease.
Stafford-based Housing Plus has donated £2,284.16 to Cancer Research UK, its Charity of the Year for the past year.
The charity was chosen by the Group’s 2013 Employee of the Year, Colin Spires.
Mr Spires works as an advice and support officer, helping residents in financial difficulties to claim the benefits they are entitled to and avoid or get out of rent arrears.
He said: “A few years ago I had throat cancer. I was off work for some time and had to learn to talk again.
“I was really pleased to be named Employee of the Year 2013 and be able to choose Cancer Research as the charity for the business to support, as it is a cause close to my heart.
“I’ve put in a lot of hard work over the years in my role and it was lovely to have that effort recognised in this way.”
The money was raised by Housing Plus staff through a variety of events, including dress down days, a curry day and cake sales at the Housing Plus offices. The organisation also hosted a soul and motown music evening, and employees completed sponsored climbs of Snowdon and Scafell Pike.
