A LISTED building in Stafford could soon be converted into retirement apartments if planners give the go ahead.

Developer McCarthy and Stone Retirement Lifestyles Ltd wants to demolish extensions to the grade II listed Green Hall, in Lichfield Road, Stafford, and convert the listed section.

The cleared land would provide room for 45 apartments with a 40-space car park, with a further eight apartments proposed in the Green Hall building.

A small block of three mews houses is also included in the plans.

The land is in the Forebridge Conservation area and the plans have been called in for debate by Stafford Borough Council’s planning committee because of its impact on neighbouring properties.

The council’s head of leisure and cultural services has asked for financial contributions of more than £90,000 for open spaces, sports contributions and allotment space.

Committee members are recommended to approve the plans which go before them on Wednesday.
