A STAFFORD man was killed after his car collided with a tree and ended up on its roof near Penkridge.
The 39-year-old man, who has not yet been named, had been driving a grey BMW 330 when the crash happened in Congreve Road, Congreve, sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
He had contacted his family on his way home at 10pm to tell them he would be delayed but his car was not found until 4.50am by a passing motorist.
Police are now urging any witnesses to contact them.
The man’s family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
PC Andy Hogan said: “We know that the driver left the West Mercia area and contacted his family on his way home to advise he would be delayed due to a road closure just before 10pm.
“However, the vehicle was not found until 4.50am by a passing motorist, so we are appealing for anyone who may have seen the car in the area between these times to get in touch.”
The road remained closed between Lapley Lane and Pinfold Lane yesterday morning while specialist officers carried out an investigation at the scene.
Witnesses are asked to contact PC Andy Hogan at Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 68 of August 28.
