STAFFORD cyclists and motorists could soon have a new way to report potholes thanks to £30,000 government cash.

The Department of Transport pledged the money to the Cyclists’ Touring Club (CTC) to revamp their Fill That Hole website and develop a new app compatible with Android smartphones.

More than nine million iPhone users can already download the current app to report potholed roads to their councils and the new app could boost that figure to more than 26 million.

It is expected to be ready in February when damage to roads is at its greatest.

Roads Minister Robert Goodwill said: “Filling potholes in quickly is only one half of the story. Research has also shown a long-term approach to road maintenance, rather than patch and mend, can save councils and taxpayers money and potentially save lives thanks to better road conditions.”

In June the department announced a further £5.8 billion for highways maintenance from 2015/16 to 2020/21.
