PLANNERS will decide on Friday whether to allow a fruit farmer to put 30 caravans on his land for workers.

Tom Busby has applied for permission to site the caravans at Knightley Hall Farm to house seasonal workers, most of whom will come from eastern Europe.

In June members of Stafford Borough Council’s planning committee said they wanted to see the site before making a decision.

Mr Busby told the committee: “It is essential for our business to continue having seasonal workers on site. Without them our business wouldn’t exist. We tried to recruit staff locally and had 20 applicants – only one turned up and lasted a day.”

Some 47 residents and three parish councils have objected to the proposals saying there will be noise and litter, there is no regular bus service and transport concerns.

The committee will reconvene on Friday after visiting the Gnosall Road farm in the morning.

The application is recommended to be approved.
