Stafford pupils in the swim for national glory

FIVE swimmers from Stafford’s Walton High School have achieved national qualifying times. The fantastic five have had an outstanding season so far, and have amassed a list of swimming achievements. All five have attained national qualifying times which will take them through to the national swimming championships in July and August this year. The qualifiers are: Tom Derbyshire (year 11) in the 1500, 400, 200 freestyle, the 200, 100 breaststroke, 200 fly, and 400,200 IM. Lewis Hodgetts (year 9) in the 1500 freestyle, and 200, 100 fly; Georgina Walker (year 9) 800 in the freestyle; Ben Cope (year 7) in the 200 backstroke; and Thomas Watkin (year 7) in the 1500 freestyle. Neil Finlay, headteacher at Walton High School, said: “To have one swimmer of national standard in a school is a rarity; to have five at the same time is truly amazing. “I am in awe of the dedication, effort, talent and sheer hard work of these students and I also want to acknowledge the incredible support offered by their parents. We are hopeful of further successes in the years to come.”
