A FORMER Stafford runner is aiming to prove that orange is not the only fruit when she takes part in the town’s half marathon.

Sally Orange will run in an apple costume in preparation for the London Marathon when she hopes to pip herself at the post by beating her own record-breaking time.

The 39-year-old is a regular marathon runner and has previously competed in other fruity costumes including bananas and pears.

She started running in her a-peeling costumes as a pithy response to constant teasing about her surname.

“I do get a bit of ribbing about my name – I have heard all the jokes before but it’s a bit of fun,” said the former Walton High School and Stafford College student.

Her stout efforts earned her a Guinness world record when she was nominated the fastest marathon runner dressed as a piece of fruit when she clocked 4:32 in the London Marathon dressed as an orange in 2011.

That record has now been beaten so she is aiming to get it back.

Miss Orange left town when she joined up but her parents still live her.

Among the events she has taken part in are races in Afghanistan where she was a major on a tour of duty in 2011.

She has also run as a pear alongside injured forces personnel dressed as bananas.

Her London Marathon run has a serious side as she is raising funds for Help for Heroes and Combat Stress.

Although she has left the Army she is still in the reserves. Her latest half marathon was Reading last week.
