FIVE Stafford students will target national swimming titles after excelling at the independent schools’ regional championships in Walsall.

Ben Colclough, aged 15, touched first by half a length for Stafford Grammar School (SGS) in the under-18 individual medley and also stormed to victory in the butterfly race at the ISA Midlands gala which included competitors from 16 schools.

The Chase SC member, who smashed the u15 ISA freestyle record last year, will represent the regional u18 team at the national championships in Coventry in January, where he will also gun for gold in the freestyle and medley relays.

Stafford Preparatory School’s (SPS) Finn Nicholl (Stafford Apex) will also bid for four medals at Coventry after capturing u11 individual freestyle and butterfly titles.

The ten-year-old also earned a place in two relay teams and captured an ISA Outstanding Swimming Award alongside Colclough.

SGS student Eliza Grace, 14, (Cannock Phoenix) will target individual and relay podium finishes after clinching silver in the u15 medley.

Joining the others in the ISA Midlands squad are Megan McCandless, 12, (Stafford Apex) and Ryan Hopper, 11, (Cannock Phoenix) who performed strongly in freestyle relay qualifying events. Meanwhile, McCandless touched third in the u13 individual freestyle, while Hopper was second in the u12 butterfly.

Schoolmates, Ollie Moreton, 15, and Oliver Cox, 12, have been selected as reserves. Libby Henderson, 15, was third in the u18 freestyle, Helen Staite, 13, and Kristian Allen, 11, were bronze medalists in the u13 breastroke and u12 backstroke respectively.
