STAFFORD’S junior tennis player Megan Davies is through to the quarter finals of a competition that set Andy Murray on the road to glory for the second year running.
She beat Serena Nash 6-1, 6-7 in the Under 16 girls’s singles tournament at the Nike Junior Tennis Championships at the Nottingham Tennis Centre.
The competition is the highest level junior tournament and is the highlight of the domestic summer calendar.
Some 250 players across four age groups have taken part in the competition which showcases the best talent in the country.
It has run for more than 100 years and has been a launchpad for some of the game’s top names including Andy Murray, Heather Watson, Tim Henman, Elena Baltacha, and Anne Keothavong.
Megan was set to face Surrey’s Emily Appleton in the quarter finals as we went to press on Wednesday.
She said: “I’m really happy to get through to the quarters and glad to get through that second set. I got the to the quarter-finals in the 14’s last year and I know it will be tough against Emily.”
The tournament runs until Friday and is held simultaneously at the Nottingham Tennis Centre and the West Hants Club, Bournemouth.
