The Rings

One thing that Simon and I had both decided from the start was to put a decent amount of our wedding budget towards our wedding rings.

It’s ok to have all the frills of a church wedding and big reception but once the day is over, you’ve only really got memories and photos to remind you of your big day.

So we felt that our wedding rings should be a lifetime investment – as hopefully we will be wearing them for a lifetime.

When we got engaged Simon decided he didn’t want an engagement ring as his work in the garage restricts him from wearing rings at work. Which means he’s really excited about having a wedding ring, even if he can only wear it at evenings and weekends.

We had a look on the internet at businesses that make bespoke wedding rings but felt it probably wasn’t right to order them online as you can’t really see the quality and what you’re getting for your money.

We then visited a couple of jewellers in Derby but still couldn’t find anything we liked. In the end we decided to try the wedding fayres again.

At one of the fayres at Bosworth Hall we met a lovely guy, called Kevin, who hand made engagement and wedding rings. His company is called Personally Yours and he had a great gimmick to get you to take his details.

He had a pot full of identical gems and asked me to pick one.

Apparently, there was one diamond in the pot and if you invited him to give you a quote for your wedding rings he would test the gem at your home. If it was the diamond he would make it into a necklace for you free of charge. If not, then at least he’d had the opportunity to show you some of the pieces he’d already made.

I thought this was a great idea so gave him our details and chose a gem.

When he came to see us at home, he was brilliant!  He went through all the different styles of rings available, different shapes etc etc. He had a huge box of different samples that we could look at and try on and he gave us both advice on weights of rings and styles that would suit our hand size and shape. He also measured my engagement ring and recommended a style that would lie well alongside it.

It was great to do this at home and not at a shop as I felt we had his full attention and I felt that he wasn’t pushy either. The other great thing with him is that you pick the style, weight and thickness of your rings, he gives you a quote and you don’t have to pay any money until he’s made them, you’ve seen them and you’re happy with them. You don’t even have to pay a deposit. I don’t want to say too much about the styles we’d picked, just that Simon’s chosen something fancy and I’ve gone for simple.

The only down side to his visit was that the gem I’d picked at the wedding fayre was only glass. Simon did get worried though when he tried to show me the noise his diamond testing machine would have made if the gem was a diamond by testing it on my engagement ring.

He delivered the rings last month, and they are absolutely beautiful. Simon was amazed with his and didn’t want to take it off after he’d tried it on and mine was so weighty but fit so snug against my engagement ring.  It was perfect – I can’t wait to wear it now.
