A 22-YEAR-OLD man held in connection with the death of an elderly man in Highfields on Christmas morning is still being held by police after detectives were granted an extension to their investigations.
A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: “Following an application at Magistrates Court made on Boxing Day, detectives have been granted an extension allowing officers to hold the man arrested in connection with this incident until late this evening.
“A post-mortem will take place today and we don't expect to be able to confirm the name of the man who died until later.
“The family of the elderly gentleman continue to be supported by specially trained officers.”
“We would like to thank everyone for not naming the gentleman involved whilst we continue to inform and support family members.”
In the meantime, tributes on social media have continued to pour in to the man.
Posting on Staffordshire Police’s Facebook page on Christmas Day, Lea Mitchell said: “Just dreadful, dreadful that it's happened in my home town, dreadful that it's happened today of all days.
“Dreadful that's it's even happened at all,” she said. “I hope his family are now traced and are fully supported in dealing with this earth shattering news.
“Keep up your good and hard work Staffordshire Police.”
