STAFFORDSHIRE police are warning householders and motorists to be on the alert and make sure thieves don't ruin their enjoyment of the warm and sunny days forecast this weekend.

"Ensure all doors and windows are locked and secure if you leave the house, or even while you are out enjoying the garden," a police spokeswoman said.

"It can take an opportunist thief just seconds to reach in, or sneak through, an open door or window and steal valuable items."

Householders are also advised to lock away garden tools, lawn mowers, BBQ equipment and bicycles when when not in use sheds and outdoor buildings locked and secure at all times.

Anyone going away for the weekend should ask a friend or neighbour to keep an eye on their home, and report any suspicious activity to the police by phoning 101.

Motorists are reminded to keep vehicles secure and don't leave all the windows down, or - even worse - the keys in the ignition.

"We want everyone to enjoy the good weather and be able to relax, knowing their home and property is as secure as it can be," the spokeswoman added.
