A STAG suffered 'a cruel death' after poachers using hunting dogs chased it down in the Blithbury area of Rugeley at the weekend.
A spokesman for Staffordshire Countryside Watch urged people to be vigilant for poachers in the area.
"On October 27 during the hours of darkness offenders have approached the fields of a farm and used hunting dogs to chase and kill a stag before escaping," she said. "The stag suffered a cruel death."
She said the illegal practice of deer poaching was unnacceptable and it was important that people living and working in rural areas were aware of the activity and act as the eyes and ears of the police, reporting any suspicious activity by calling 101, or in the event of an emergency calling 999.
