Stone householders' flood fears thwart plans for 92 homes

PLANNERS struggled to make a decision on proposals to build up to 92 homes in a part of Stone at risk of flooding.

Taylor Wimpey lodged an outline application to build the houses between Common Lane and Eccleshall Road.

Objector Katie Katabalwa, 35, of Foxwood Close, said the plans would impact residents’ privacy.

“Residents have experienced flooding and drainage problems each year,” she said.

“Visiting the site could allow you to make a more informed judgement. We are also concerned that the land is not designated for development in the strategic plan.”

Planning consultant Rachael Adams said: “The development of this site is in accordance with the emerging local plan.”

Ward Councillor Mike Williamson said: “The land is designated as agricultural land. The site is outside the residential development boundary and is not considered suitable for development in the emerging local plan. There are traffic problems with the proposed access and insufficient consideration has been given to the problem caused by flooding.”

Councillor Margaret Goodall, another ward member, said: “The development of the proposed site will only lead to further problems on the drainage system. Should we as a council really want to be responsible for allowing a development which will create another flooding problem for Stone.”

Councillor Geoff Collier said the cumulative effect of this and other planning applications amounted to nearly 700 new homes which would put a strain on the infrastructure.

“I couldn’t say yes to this development,” he said.

Councillor Frank James said: “If we go along with this we are going into a fool’s paradise and we are going to flood the centre of Stone.”

Councillor Ian Hollinshead said: “We have no real grounds to refuse it.”

Proposals for a site visit and to approve the plans were voted down before the committee rejected the plans because of loss of a countryside site and an existing five-year supply of housing land.
