A FORCES mum near Stafford who shed five stone in a year is gearing up for another weighty challenge - trekking the Great Wall of China to help injured troops.

Penny Lock, whose sons Matt and Josh are currently serving in the 3rd Mercian Regiment (Staffords), has already raised thousands of pounds for Help for Heroes.

And to celebrate her weight loss milestone the Haughton resident plans to put her best foot forward for the cause again next year with friend Phil Barker.

Penny met Phil last year while taking part in Time Team Academy.

She won backing for local troops from Time Team presenter Tony Robinson last year, who showed his support by donning a 3rd Mercian wristband.

And for her planned Great Wall of China trek Penny has the support of another TV personality comic John Bishop, She said: “He came to film at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth where I had been working.

"He was more than happy to pose with our bear mascot and signed her so we can auction her off if we want, which was lovely of him.

“I was looking for a bit of a challenge after losing five stone and it was Phil’s suggestion to do the Great Wall of China trek. It’s about 70 km in seven days.

“We have to raise £3,300 each to take part. Earlier this month we completed the Hadrian’s Wall challenge - 20 miles in one day - again for Help for Heroes.

"It was good practice but hard work!

“We want to see if there are any companies out there who would like to help us out, perhaps donating equipment in return for us promoting them on our trip or if anyone would just like to donate.

"We have already had T-shirts printed donated by Footprint in Penkridge.”

The pair have a Facebook page, Scrambled Legs, where they give regular updates on their progress. Anyone who would like to make an online donation can do so online at their fund- raising page, www.bmycharity.com/ScrambledLegs, or call Penny on 01785 780736.
