A STONE sports club is hosting a 24 hour tennis session in memory of a popular local lad.
Family and friends of tragic Kieran “Lally” McColl have joined forces with Stone Tennis Club to hold the fundraiser for epilepsy charities. The 21-year-old’s uncle, Darren Hillyard, who organised the event, is a member of the club alongside his tennis-mad son Ben, 14.
Players began their marathon session at 10am this morning and are due to finish tomorrow morning. There is also a car wash and barbecue taking place at the Newcastle Road club today.
Kieran passed away in May, after falling into the Trent and Mersey Canal on his way home from the funeral and wake of close friend Connan McLeod. He was a strong swimmer, but had suffered an epileptic fit which left him unable to save himself after missing his footing on the unlit towpath, Cannock Coroner’s Court heard this week.
Since his death Kieran’s family have launched a drive to raise £10,000 to help others affected by epilepsy. The Lol4Lally campaign has netted considerable support from the Stone community and has its own Facebook page and Twitter account.
