THERE was a vast improvement from Stafford LHC thirds as they went close to turning the tables on Bloxwich seconds, in Staffs League division two.

Stafford suffered a heavy defeat last time, but on this occasion they should have gained all the points.

The local side dominated the first period with Hannah Cook racing down the right flank creating several chances from which they were unlucky not to score.

Stafford found the Bloxwich keeper in superb form as she made a number of crucial saves. Then, against the run of play, Bloxwich went one up at half time.

Buoyed by their lead, Bloxwich pegged Stafford back but the defence held firm with keeper Sam Ferguson making a string of outstanding saves for the second week running.

Stafford regrouped and continued to probe down the right with Heather Craig excelling again.

Forward Chelsie Cole impressed on the opposite flank and it was her tenacious play that forced a short corner. Christine Weetman made no mistake with a trademark ferocious strike into the bottom corner.

Stafford continued to press for the win but despite hitting the post and several goal-line clearances, were left frustrated with a share of the spoils.

Stafford's player of the match was Ferguson.

In the top flight there were mixed fortunes for Stafford firsts and seconds.

The second placed firsts just missed out 3-2 in a top of the table encounter against unbeaten leaders Bloxwich firsts. As a result, Stafford slipped to third spot.

Meanwhile, Stafford seconds moved up into the top five with a well earned 2-0 victory at North Staffs seconds.

Fixtures: Div 2, Stone seconds v West Bromwich, Aldridge and Walsall v Stafford thirds; Div 3, Cannock fourths v Stone thirds; Div 4, Stafford fourths v Stafford fifths
