UNBEATEN Stafford Rangers Youth extended their impressive win record to reach the last four of this season’s Staffs Midweek Floodlit Youth Cup on Monday night.
In front of a crowd of over 100 at Marston Road, on what was a surprisingly firm pitch, which had drained well after several inches of snow, Rangers ran out 2-0 victors against Walsall Wood.
Rangers created a host of chances which, on another day, might have led to a more emphatic win.
Alex Hannan, who was denied by the Walsall keeper’s legs and then a linesman’s flag early on, broke the deadlock just befote half-time.
Tom Vaughan won the ball in midfield and threaded a pass through to the pacey Hannan who finished at the near post.
The second half saw Rangers remain comfortable against a side that operates in a league that contains the likes of Birmingham City, AFC Telford and Hednesford.
Josh Renshaw protected the defence from a deep midfield role which allowed others to threaten further upfield.
The second goal effectively sealed the tie as Hannan’s flick on allowed substitute Aaron Audley to race through and beat the advancing keeper.
Walsall Wood finished the match with ten men after Hannan was brought down. Next month, Rangers entertain Hednesford in the semi-finals.
