VILLAGE campaigner Anne Clendon, pictured, who has spent years working to protect Colwich and the Haywoods has been awarded the British Empire Medal.

Mrs Clendon, 77, received the award for services to the community and said she was shocked by the news.

"It is unbelievable," she said. "I had a letter a few weeks ago informing me I was in the running, but when I found out I actually had got the honour I couldn't believe it."

Mrs Clendon has lived in the Haywoods since 1962 and is a staunch supporter of the villages. She is a member of Colwich Parish Council and plays the organ at Colton Church.

Mrs Clendon, who has two grown-up children, Matthew and Hannah, added: "I have always been committed to keeping the Haywoods as good as they can be. To be recognised is fantastic."
